NEPA To Host CSEC Seminars For Students Across Jamaica

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will step up its public education initiatives during the month of October by hosting two Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Student Seminars across the island.
The seminars targeting nearly 500 fourth and fifth form CSEC Geography and Science students and teachers across the island will be held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston on October 3, 2019 and at the Cardiff Hotel in St. Ann on October 9, 2019.
Ollyvia Anderson, Manager, Public Education and Corporate Communication, NEPA, said, “this year’s Seminars builds on previous sessions, which have impacted over 600 participants to date.” She added, “the seminars have been organized to foster a greater appreciation of environmental issues and their impact on the local environment. In addition, the Seminars will be used as an opportunity to inform participants about the range of the data resources available at NEPA to assist with the completion of CSEC School Based Assessments (SBAs) for the sciences.”
Coverage of CSEC Geography Syllabus
The Seminar will cover topics included on the CSEC Geography Syllabus that are aligned with the Agency’s work. These include, deforestation, water quality testing, air pollution, coral reefs, and mangroves. Also included is accessing the Jamaica Observer’s Lecture Series online.
Through a series of presentations and interactive activities, the seminar will sensitize students on the role and function of NEPA. Presentations and displays from stakeholders including, Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), Water Resources Authority (WRA), Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) Department of Geography, Discovery Bay Marine Lab, and the Forestry Department will also be featured.
