NEPA Investigates Fish Kill in Portmore, St Catherine

Yesterday at approximately 12PM the National Environment and Planning Agency received reports of a fish kill in the Bridgeport area of Portmore, St Catherine.

The Agency’s pollution response team was immediately deployed and conducted a joint investigation with the National Fisheries Authority.

The area of concern spanned the Dawkins Pond in the vicinity of Edgewater and extended to Forum Beach. Samples of the seawater and the fish were collected and sent for testing.

Senior Manager, Environmental Management Sub-Division, Mr. Richard Nelson, is reporting that investigations have commenced and the teams are working assiduously to ascertain the cause/s.

“While the investigation so far has confirmed the fish kill, at this point we are yet to determine the cause/s as we are awaiting laboratory test results on water quality and fish samples collected.”

The team has gone back out today where they are joined by National Fisheries Authority and the JCF Marine Police along with assistance from the JDF Coast Guard as they continue to the investigation.
