The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has concluded its investigations of the recent fish kill which occurred at the Dawkins Pond in St Catherine, on 21 September 2022. The Agency has surmised that the die-off of these fish was due to low oxygen levels in the water.
Further, the cause of the death of the fish is attributed to eutrophic conditions associated with an algal bloom and oxygen depletion following recent rainfall and the discharge of stormwater into a confined area of the Dawkins Pond.
