NEPA Celebrates National Environmental Awareness Week (NEAW) 2019

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) - and other regulatory stakeholders- will celebrate National Environmental Awareness Week (NEAW) from June 2-9, 2019. The theme for the week is, “A Better Environment = A Better Life… Do the Right Thing!”

Mr Peter Knight, Chief Executive Officer, NEPA, explained that, “theme for NEAW 2019 is a call to action for all Jamaica’s citizens to take bolder steps to improve conditions in the built and natural environment.” He added: “we are encouraging all Jamaicans to take stock of how their actions may harm or help the environment.”

The week will commence with a National Church Service on Sunday, June 2 at the Portmore New Testament Church of God in Bayside, Portmore. The service begins at 8:45 am and is open to the public.

On World Environment Day, Wednesday June 5, the Agency will host a public forum and panel discussion titled, Let’s Talk Environment and Planning. The forum will focus on: “Plastic Possibilities: The Role of the Blue, Green and Orange Economies.” Senator Matthew Samuda will moderate the panel discussions, which will include presentations from Mr Tyrone Wilson, President and CEO, eMedia Interactive (Orange Economy), Ms Ingrid Parchment, Executive Director, Caribbean Coastal Area Management (C-CAM) Foundation (Blue Economy) and Dr Michael Witter, Retired Lecturer and Researcher (Green Economy).

The forum is free of charge and open to the public and will be lived streamed on NEPA’s Facebook page. During the forum, participants will be educated on how plastic proliferation impacts the Blue, Green and Orange economies and learn practical solutions for overcoming these effects. The forum has been designed for stakeholders from the public and private sector including, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, environmental NGOs, government, Ministries, Agencies and Departments, the media and the public, in general.

NEAW 2019 will culminate with the staging of Green Expo 2019, which is hosted by the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT) in partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA)/NEPA and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ).

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), National Conservation Trust of Jamaica (NCTFJ) and the Conservation Through Education Jamaica will be hosting activities during NEAW 2019.

The NEPA will publish newspaper features in the Gleaner and Observer on World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8). The publications are geared towards informing and educating students, parents, and the public, in general, about the Agency’s role in managing and conserving Jamaica’s land, wood, air and water.
