NEPA advises the public on possible environmental impacts associated with Tropical Depression Nine

The National Environment and Planning Agency is advising the public to take precautions as the nation gears up for Tropical Depression 9 which is expected to commence impacting Jamaica and its territorial waters by Saturday afternoon.

Based on the forecast, beach operators in the parishes of St Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, and St James are being advised to secure temporary structures and other assets away from beach areas as the tropical system is expected to generate high waves and storm surges which will likely result in beach erosion along the coast.

Entities that store hazardous wastes are advised to ensure their containment systems are properly secured and otherwise have sufficient capacity so as not to cause a discharge to the environment.

The general public is also being advised to be on the lookout for wildlife, such as crocodiles, that might become displaced due to the rainfall. Persons are encouraged to contact the Agency at 876-754-7540 in the event any of these animals are observed outside of their natural habitat where they may pose a threat to human activities or if they are being harassed or harmed.
