National Capacity Self-Assessment Project (NCSA) Jamaica has ratified the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention to Combat Desertification and the Convention on Biological Diversity. This requires a collaborative approach and coordinated actions with regard to environmental issues, in order to meet our international commitments. It is for this reason that the National Capacity Self-Assessment Project (NSCA) is of particular importance, as it focuses directly on capacity issues pertinent to the implementation of these three conventions.

Institutional Strengthening to Support Environmental Management of Kingston Harbour The Project will have the following five components: (a) Institutional Strengthening; (b) Development of a Physical Plan for Kingston Harbor; (c) Improving Environmental Performance of Industries Discharging to Kingston Harbor; (d) Development of Documentation and Tender Documents for a Ship-Generated Waste Reception Facility; and (e) Public Outreach, Education, and Training.

The Environmental Action (ENACT) Programme

The ENACT programme is implemented by the Government of Jamaica through the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) (formerly the Natural Resources Conservation Authority, NRCA) and a Canadian joint venture Dessau-Soprin & Marbek. ENACT was initiated in 1994 when preliminary work began laying down the foundations for the programme. A contract was signed between the parties involved in June 1996, marking the official start of activities and it will end in 2004.

Ridge to Reef Watershed Project R2RW is a five-year initiative between the Government of Jamaica's National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and USAID, addressing the degradation of watersheds on the island.

Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) The Jamaica Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) is a USAID-funded activity designed to protect and improve the environmental quality of the country's coastal resources. The Project relies on a community-based program to tackle the problem. In implementing the project, ARD is working in partnership with national agencies, national and local NGOs, community groups, and the private sector.
