The National Environment & Planning Agency has
responded to a pollution incident along the South Negril River in
Westmoreland. The Agency conducted an investigation on Thursday
(February 2, 2012) after reports were received that there was
evidence that the river was being polluted.
Enforcement Officers from the Agency visited
the area and an initial assessment was conducted. The preliminary
findings suggested that pollution of the river was likely caused by
sewage effluent. The Agency has identified the source of the
pollution at the outfall (sewage pipe) from the National Water
Commission (NWC) Sewage Treatment Plant in Sheffield, Westmoreland.
The Manager of the Enforcement Branch at NEPA
has brought the matter to the attention of the NWC and mandated that
the malfunctioning system be rectified within 24 hours.
The Agency has collected water samples along
the river for laboratory analysis.
In the meantime, residents and especially fishermen are asked to
avoid using the area
