The only truly Jamaican event on
the environmental calendar, National Wood and Water Day, will be
observed in the parish of Portland this year by a tree planting
exercises over two days, Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, 2008.
Since its inception in 1985,
National Wood and Water Day has been observed on the first Saturday
in October. This year the National Environment and Planning
Agency/Global Environment Facility – Integrated Watershed and
Coastal Areas Management Project (NEPA/GEF- IWCAM) and its many
Stakeholders will commemorate National Wood and Water Day by
planting coconut seedlings along the coastline in front of the Long
Bay/Fair Prospect Citizens’ Association Meeting House, and along the
Manchioneal coastline in the vicinity of the fishing village as well
as around the town.
Activities in the Watershed
will actually begin on Friday October 3, 2008 with an opening
ceremony and tree planting exercise at the Fair Prospect High School
and culminate on Saturday, October 4, 2008, with the “Community
Planting Day” at Long Bay and Manchioneal.
Each day the proceedings will
begin at 11:00 a.m. The planting materials will consist of cassava
sticks for the school and coconut seedlings for the communities.
Community Stakeholders supporting and participating in the Drivers
River Watershed Management Unit (DRWMU) specifically requested these
planting materials. Planting trees is beneficial to the environment
as they reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on the landscape and are
a source of food, clothing and shelter.
The DRWMU welcomes everyone to
attend and take part in these community and country enhancing
activities. Come out and plant a tree, keep Portland green and make
sure Jamaica remains the Land of Wood and Water.
