The fishing community of
Manchioneal, East Portland, comes alive on Saturday, March 21, 2009
when it will be the centre of World Water Day celebrations in the
Drivers River Watershed Management Unit.
World Water Day activities will
take the form of an Environmental Expo and community sports package
organized by the National Environment and Planning Agency’s Global
Environment Facility - Integrating Watershed and Coastal Areas
Management Project (NEPA/GEF-IWCAM) and the Drivers River
Development Area Committee (DAC).
The international observance of
World Water Day started in 1992 when the United Nations General
Assembly designated March 22nd as World Water Day, in order to draw
attention to the critical lack of clean, safe drinking water
worldwide. This year’s theme is: Transboundary waters; sharing
water, sharing opportunities.
The Drivers Rivers Watershed
Management Unit is the project site for an 18-month environmental
project which aims to develop this watershed as a successful pilot
site by showcasing the “Best Practices” resulting from an integrated
inter-agency approach to environmental stewardship. There are 14
communities within the Drivers River Watershed, stretching from the
East River in Prospect, Port Antonio, to Hector’s River in the
east.
Booth displays and
presentations by participating agencies which include: the Urban
Development Corporation (UDC), Portland Environment Protection
Association (PEPA), Social Development Commission (SDC),
Meteorological Services and others, will be accompanied by Spot
quizzes and inter-community football, domino and netball matches.
Activities begin at 10:00 .am.
