MEDIA RELEASE - April 21, 2009

The National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, has been successful in its court action against Mr. Jeffrey Thompson, for breaching the Wild Life Protection Act (section 6).

On 21 March, 2009, Mr. Thompson was arrested by the St. Andrew North Police after he was caught selling two birds; one yellow billed parrot and one black billed parrot, both of which are protected under the Wild Life Protection Act (1945). When he appeared in the Half Way Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court on 9 April, 2009, Mr. Thompson pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing Protected Birds. He was ordered to pay five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) on each count or face 30 days in prison.

NEPA is again appealing to Jamaicans to respect the law as it concerns the capture, killing, injury or sale of any protected animal. The Agency is reminding persons that it is part of their civic duty to protect these vulnerable animals. The public is being asked to report any breaches of the Wild Life Protection Act to NEPA through its Enforcement Branch, at 754-7540 or 1-888-991-5005. Reports can also be made to the Manager of NEPA’s Public Education and Corporate Communication Branch, Mrs. Natalie Fearon at 478-7957 or to the police through the 119 emergency number.
