The National Environment and
Planning Agency has served Enforcement Notices on the National Water
Commission (NWC) for breaches of the Natural Resources Conservation
(NRCA) Act. The Notices were served on November 30, 2009 under
Section 18 of the Act.
The Notices concern the
discharge of improperly treated sewage from the
Bridgeport Sewage
Treatment Plant into the Dawkins Pond and from the
Independence City
Sewage Treatment Plant into the Hunts Bay. The activities pose
a
serious threat to public health and to natural resources.
As per the conditions of the
Enforcement Notices attached, the NWC is to cease immediately the
discharge of improperly treated sewage and submit a compliance plan
within 30 days. If the NWC is aggrieved it has 28 days of the date
of the Notice to lodge an appeal.
NEPA is reminding the
operators of enterprises and the public that it’s zero tolerance
approach to breaches of the country’s environment and planning laws
will be sustained. Non-compliant individuals and/or companies will
feel the full weight of the law.
