MEDIA RELEASE - March 10, 2009

The National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, wishes to respond to a statement attributed to the Secretary Manager of the St. James Parish Council, Winston Palmer, as carried in the 9, March, 2009 edition of the Jamaica Observer newspaper. Under the headline, ‘Claro in hot waters over cell towers’, Mr. Palmer is quoted as saying that Claro ‘might have received planning approval from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).’ We take the opportunity to remind the public that NEPA does not grant planning approval for the erection of cell towers. Rather, it is the Town and Country Planning Authority, TCPA, which approves such applications.
