PRESS RELEASE - July 17, 2008

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) wishes to respond to a Gleaner report entitled “Sandals under sewage discharge probe in St. Ann” which appeared in that newspaper on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, on Page A4.

The report claims that investigations are currently underway over allegations of discharge from the Sandals Dunn’s River Hotel in Mammee Bay, St. Ann, into the marine environment. It further asserts that, a NEPA officer was called in and subsequently confirmed that the beach had, in fact, been contaminated.

We wish to clarify any misinterpretation of the headline and opening paragraphs by stating that Sandals Dunn’s River was not under investigation for sewage discharge, neither did our investigation reveal any evidence of sewage discharge.  Investigations by the Agency revealed that wash water, not sewage, was being discharged into the storm drains.

The necessary enforcement action was taken by NEPA to ensure that the matters leading to the discharge of wash water were rectified by the hotel.
