PRESS RELEASE - September 08, 2008

We write in response to a report carried in your 7:00am newscast this morning concerning a complaint from a St. Ann based hotelier about NEPA’s inaction in clearing huge piles of debris from a beach in White River in the parish. The debris was reportedly washed up on the shore during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav. In your report this morning the hotelier, Audrey Hutchinson, Assistant General Manager of Crystal Ripple Beach Lodge, identifies NEPA as one of those Agencies which has been ‘tardy’ in providing assistance to clean the beach.

The Agency has spoken to Ms. Hutchinson about the matter and she has informed us that her views were slightly misrepresented in the newscast. According to her she’s well aware that NEPA is not responsible for public cleansing activities. She further stated that reference to the Agency was being made only in relation to the education of persons to not dump garbage and other refuse near waterways and streams.

The Agency is kindly requesting that any subsequent airing of the story be written to reflect the fact that the Agency is not a public cleansing body and has no responsibility for cleaning the White River beach in this instance. We thank you for your understanding.
