PRESS RELEASE - September 05, 2008

Prime Minister Bruce Golding yesterday approved a recommendation for the continuation of the 2008 Bird Shooting Season made by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA). Hunters were encouraged to refrain from shooting last weekend as a result of the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav. The continuation of the season was made with the condition that in the eastern parish of Portland the communities of Boston Bay to Hector’s River will be designated ‘no shooting areas’.

The decision was made after NEPA conducted a rapid ecological assessment of the effects of Tropical Storm Gustav on the natural habitats in all parishes between September 1 and 3, 2008.

The 2008 Game Bird Shooting Season was declared open on Saturday, August 23, and will close on Sunday, September 28th. All hunters are reminded that they must obtain a Hunter’s Licence before shooting. Hunters’ Licences may be purchased from NEPA or any of its licenced vendors at cost of $12,000 this year.

During the Season hunting is only allowed on Saturdays and Sundays. Shooting begins on Saturdays at sunrise and ends at 9:00 a.m., and resumes at 2:30 p.m. and ends sunset. On Sundays, hunting starts at sunrise and ends at 9:00 a.m. Only 20 birds may be shot in each session with the exception of the Bald-Pate for which the limit is 15.
