The National Environment and
Planning Agency (NEPA) will be hosting a series of community
consultations to discuss the Canoe Valley Proposed Protected Area,
between April 23 to 25, 2007. The meetings, which will be held in
Clarendon, are part of a series of community consultative meetings to
discuss the findings of fieldwork conducted in the Canoe Valley
Proposed Protected Area.
On Monday April 23, 2007, NEPA
will host the first community meeting at the Marley Hill Primary
School which is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. This will be followed
by the second meeting scheduled for Tuesday April 24, 2007 at the Rest
Primary and Junior High which will get underway at 5:00 p.m. At that
meeting, the Agency will partner with the Social Development
Commission (SDC). The final community meeting will take place in the
Alligator Pond, Manchester, at the Community Centre on Wednesday,
April 25, 2007; this meeting is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. NEPA
is desirous of sharing the findings with the communities as well as
receiving feedback on its findings, prior to the declaration of Canoe
Valley as a protected area under the Natural Resources Conservation
Authority Act.
During July to November 2006, a
joint team conducted fieldwork within the proposed boundaries of the
Canoe Valley Proposed Protected Area. The team was comprised of the
Institute of Jamaica, the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, the Bird
Life Jamaica, the University of the West Indies Sub Aqua Club, the
Island Special Constabulary Force and NEPA.
