PRESS RELEASE - December 12, 2007

In light of the pending impact to the island by Tropical Strom Olga, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) wishes to remind the public to exercise caution and not venture into flooded rivers or gullies as these may be habitats for crocodiles. Members of the public are being advised not to capture crocodiles when they are sighted, but rather to call the Agency or the police to have the animal rescued.

Crocodiles are protected under the Wild Life Protection Act, making it illegal to disturb, capture, have in one’s possession or kill the animal. Persons found contravening the law may be fined $100,000.00 or sentenced to 12 months in prison or both, at the discretion of a Resident Magistrate.

If you have an environmental emergency that you wish to report, please contact NEPA at 754-7540 or 1-888-991-5005.
