PRESS RELEASE - March 07, 2007

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is aware that a crocodile has been seen in the drain in the vicinity of a construction company in the community of Riverton City. The Agency is making attempts to retrieve and remove the crocodile; however, due to the restrictions posed by its location, this is a difficult task.

The Agency has now received reports that unauthorised persons are also attempting to capture the animal. The Agency is warning all citizens to keep away from the crocodile. When cornered, crocodiles are dangerous and could attack. Please report all sightings of the animal to NEPA at 754-7540 or 1-888-991-5005.

Crocodiles, one of many endangered animals in Jamaica, are protected by law. Capturing or killing the animal is an offence under the Wild Life Protection Act.

NEPA would like to remind the public that it is illegal to possess a crocodile or any part of the animal. Anyone caught in possession of a crocodile or any part of it is in breach of the Wild Life Protection Act. If caught and found guilty, will be liable to a fine of up to $100,000 or twelve (12) months imprisonment or both.

Remember, if crocodiles are seen in areas where they may become a threat to human activities, please call the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) or the nearest police station.
