On Thursday, November 8, 2007,
Jamaica joins the international community in celebration of World
Town Planning (WTP) Day under the theme: “Planning Today for a
Better Tomorrow”. Internationally World Town Planning Day (WTP) is
celebrated annually on November 8. The event is used to recognise
and highlight the contribution of planning to the sustainable
development of cities worldwide. Jamaica will unite with over
thirty countries, including the USA, Canada, and New Zealand to mark
this important international milestone.
The National Environment and
Planning Agency (NEPA) has organized two activities to mark the
event. These include an exhibition slated for the Sovereign Centre
on Hope Road, in St. Andrew between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as an
Outside Broadcast between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., from the same
location. The Outside Broadcast will be aired on Power 106 FM’s
“Both Sides of the Story”.
The exhibition will focus on
“good practices” in planning, both at the community and national
levels and will emphasise this year’s theme. Good planning
practices enable communities to grow economically and socially while
fostering effective integration with the natural and built
environment.
World Town Planning Day (WTP)
has its origins in the efforts of an Argentinean Professor Carlos
Maria della Paolera, at the University of Buenos Aires, who founded
the international organisation for the celebration of World Town
Planning Day in 1949.
