On Saturday, May 5, the National
Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will host Environment and
Heritage Festival at Fort Charles, Port Royal. The Festival aims to
broaden the knowledge of residents and visitors alike on the general
biodiversity, conservation, history and threats to the Palisadoes-Port
Royal Protected Area, Ramsar Site and National Heritage/Historic
Site.
The Heritage Festival is part of
NEPA’s efforts to implement a conservation campaign in the Palisadoes-Port
Royal Protected Area in collaboration with non-governmental
organizations, The Nature Conservancy and Rare. One of the objectives
of the campaign is to strengthen the capacity of Port Royal’s
residents to enable them to play a more active role in conserving the
area’s natural resources.
The campaign will also serve to
equip citizens of the area with the tools to become life-long
environmental advocates, giving the community a “voice” in
conserving their natural resources and helping community members to
improve their standard of living through the pursuit of sustainable
livelihoods. The target audience includes resource users (fishers,
oyster and shrimp harvesters), water-taxi operators, visitors and
adults and children of Port Royal.
A wide array of activities is on
offer Saturday, including kiddies’ rides, exhibition, a concert,
costume show and boat tour. The Festival gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
and ends at 5:30 p.m.
