Jamaica, in its fulfilment of
its obligations under the Convention on International Trade of
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has developed ‘A
Policy Towards Orchid Conservation in Jamaica’. The National
Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), in collaboration with various
public and private partners, developed the document which addresses
identified gaps in the protection of Jamaican plants.
The policy also examines
threats facing orchids in Jamaica, conservation activities presently
being undertaken, gaps to be addressed and the proposed goals and
strategic directions to protect approximately 220 orchids in Jamaica.
Of this number 60 are endemic species that are found only in Jamaica.
Some of the goals identified
in the policy include conservation of orchid species and their
habitats utilising in-situ (protection in the natural habitat) and
ex-situ (growing in nurseries) conservation methods; ensuring
sustainable use of orchid species; research on artificial propagation
of orchids and the development and implementation of a public
education and awareness programme.
The policy will be circulated
to government and non-government organizations, private sector
entities and tertiary institutions that have an interest in orchid
conservation.
NEPA also invites members of
the public to view the policy at its website at:
