Holy Childhood High School is the
overall winner of the recently concluded National Environment and
Planning Agency’s (NEPA) Schools Song Competition. The Kingston-based
school polled 665 points of a possible 900 points and will receive a
$15,000 gift certificate and a winner’s trophy.
Mt. James All-age School received
the next highest score and will receive a trophy. Entries were judged
on accuracy of information, scope, creativity, length and structure.
The competition is one of the
components of the Agency’s public education campaign. It served to
elicit the participation of students in the “Come Mek We Learn ‘bout
the Environment” Project, funded at a cost of $2.4 million by the
board of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA).
Under the project, officers from
the Agency visited schools across the island, to educate the students
about their role in the preservation of the natural environment; and
to assist them in starting environmental clubs. In addition, tokens
and printed materials promoting environmental stewardship were also
distributed in schools and organisations and the Documentation Centre
at NEPA was outfitted with much needed library supplies.
The Programme began in September
2005 and will continue in the coming school year with sensitisation
workshops for NGOs across the island and the production and
distribution of Environment Education Kits consisting of public
education materials. The Kits are being produced with the assistance
of the joint Government of Jamaica/Canada Environment Action (ENACT)
Programme.
