The Public Education and Corporate Communication
Branch of the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) will
launch the public education component of the Holland Bamboo
Restoration Project at a community meeting in Holland, St. Elizabeth
on Thursday April 27, 2006.
The meeting, which seeks to galvanise the
participation of residents and impart knowledge on how to care for and
maintain the bamboo as well as to discourage harvesting by residents
will take place at the Holland Bamboo Primary School, at 3:00pm.
The Holland Bamboo Restoration Project was born
out of the collaborative efforts of the National Environment and
Planning Agency, the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and
the Ministry of Agriculture, with an objective primarily aimed at the
beautification and rejuvenation of the three (3) mile-long bamboo
grove. The project will oversee the re-planting of existing species of
bamboo within the various gaps along the sides of the avenue and the
cleaning of culverts which surround the grove.
This national landmark was ravaged by hurricane
Ivan which led to extensive thinning of the canopy. The grazing of
cattle and the harvesting of bamboo by residents in the area who use
it to make fish pots have contributed to the depletion of the once
lush plants lining the Avenue.
Residents in Holland, Middle Quarters, Lacovia,
and surrounding areas are being invited to attend.
