The Authority of the National
Resources Conservation Act (ANRCA) presented the first installment of
a $4,829,008 million donation to the Negril Coral Reef Preservation
Society (NCRPS) on Wednesday March 8, 2006 at the offices of National
Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA). The Authority of the NRCA
manages the Natural Resources and Conservation (Permits and Licences)
Regulations as prescribed in the NRCA Act.
NRCA chairman Mr. James Rawle,
presented the cheque valuing $1,207,252 which will be used in the
management of the Negril Marine Park to Ms. Jean Brown, President of
the NCRPS. The balance will be disbursed in quarterly installments
over one year.
In December, the NRCA presented
25% of beach licencing fees collected between 2000 and 2005 valuing
$1.56 million to the NCRPS. At that time, Mr. Rawle noted that the
Authority hoped to provide greater financial support to the Society.
At Wednesday’s presentation Mr.
Rawle expressed his satisfaction at being able to deepen the
collaboration between the NRCA and the Negril Coral Reef Preservation
Society. He expressed the NRCA’s commitment to supporting the work of
the NCRPS which acts on behalf of the NRCA in the management of the
Marine Park. In her response, an elated Ms Brown thanked the
Authority for the well needed financial commitment to the Marine Park.
She highlighted the fact that a colleague in another Caribbean island
with whom she had shared the good news commended the Government of
Jamaica for its commitment to protecting the country’s natural
resources.
The Negril Coral Reef
Preservation Society works within the Negril Environmental Protection
Area and manages the Negril Marine Park one of Jamaica’s nine (9)
protected areas designated under the Natural Resources Conservation
