The National Environment and Planning Agency has
served an Enforcement Notice on the National Water
Commission (NWC) for the discharge of untreated sewage from the
NWC sewer grid into Barnes Gully which empties into Kingston Harbour in
the vicinity of Port Royal Street, Kingston.
The discharge of raw sewage into the environment poses a serious threat
to the health of those persons who live and work in the vicinity, as
well as the natural resources within the Kingston Harbour.
The Notice was served on September 24, 2010 under Section 18
of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act. As per the
conditions of the Enforcement Notice attached, NWC has
5 days within which to cease the discharge of the untreated
sewage into the environment, and remediate the sections of Barnes Gully
which have been affected by the raw sewage.
NEPA takes the opportunity to remind the public that it is taking a zero
tolerance approach to breaches of the country’s environment and planning
laws. The Agency will bring the full weight of the law to bear on those
individuals or entities found to be in breach.
