NEPA and JBI to meet with ALPART over dust nuisance

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) last Friday commenced investigation into the emission of dust from the mud lake at the residual disposal facility owned by the Alumina Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) in Nain, St Elizabeth.  

The Chief Executive Officer – NEPA, has summoned the management of ALPART to a meeting for Tuesday, March 16. The Company has been instructed to come prepared to provide an update on the strategic overview of the short and medium-term actions to be taken by the company to mitigate the dust nuisance. 

The Agency is extremely concerned with impact of the dust nuisance on the members of surrounding communities and will be making every effort to have the matter quickly resolved.  

The Ministry of Health – Environmental Health Unit and the Jamaica Bauxite Institute have been invited to the meeting. 

In the meantime, a team from the Enforcement Branch will continue its investigations into the matter.
