National Environment & Planning Agency Coastal Cleanup 2009

The 2009 Coastal Clean-up will take place on Saturday, September 19th, 2009. The National Environment & Planning Agency will be coordinating beach clean-up activities at two sites; Halfmoon Bay, Hellshire and Port Royal Beach starting from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (it is recommended that participants arrive at their designated cleanup site at 7:30 a.m.).


International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICCD) is traditionally celebrated on the third Saturday in September.  This regional effort is part of the 24th Annual International Coastal Clean-up sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and supported locally by business and environmentally conscious organizations.

On this specially designated day, volunteers all around the world go onto beaches to remove accumulated debris and other garbage.  The clean-up exercise offers an opportunity not only  to remove garbage from our beaches but also to collect valuable data on the nature of the solid waste that has accumulated along the coastline, not just locally, but internationally.

Sites:

Last year a total of 1750 volunteers participated in International Coastal Clean-Up Day activities at various sites across Jamaica!  270 volunteers participated at the three clean-up sites coordinated by NEPA in 2008 and removed 3412.2 kg of trash and debris from approximately 1112.6 km of shoreline.  

This year it is anticipated that even more interest in the event will be generated and that more persons will participate in the activity.  It is our hope that volunteers from your communities, schools, churches, service clubs and environmentally conscious organizations will assist in this worldwide effort to clean and protect the environment by eliminating debris that injures wildlife, contaminates our beaches and waterways, and threatens public safety. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for volunteers.

What to Bring:

• Long Pants
• Sturdy Shoes
• Insect Repellent
• Gardening Gloves or Work Gloves (we will provide extra disposable latex gloves)
• Sunscreen
• Cap/hat
• Reusable Water Bottle
• A Great Attitude!!
